Day 3, 4 & 5

As the days passes by, Christmas draws nearer. Day 3 was an interesting day as all Shell employees are given the liberty to dress down with a smart casual attire. I got to dress up College Style! The first comment my colleague gave me was, "Omg, why are you so thin? Here Eat more!". I did more sorting and photocopying of important documents for customs and excise duties. I had 2 hour break where the time was well spent with more exploration of the building area with my other fellow interns. We even got the chance to use the gym facility and it was great. Other than that I manage to understand the SAP program interface used in the Hydrocarbon Management department. Ended the day with a celebration of gathering at 1U. Simply amazing.

Day 4 was slow. With most of the staff on leave due to the year end holidays, I preoccupied myself by interviewing most of my colleagues. One of them gave me advise on career pathways and choice. Another told me about the benefits of taking up finance as a long term career. As for that the battle for a cheaper place to park continues but I am always on the positive search of cheaper and better alternatives to park. I had the opportunity to discuss with the HM vice about my internship progression. It is necessary that I make sure the internship satisfies all the criteria that matches the required succinct report that one has to produce after a grueling period of internship. She was more than welcome to accept it. Towards the end of my working period, I was given a small tour and lesson about the other available sections within the HM department. Can't wait to reach stock valuation. Number crunching!

I started off Day 5 by waking up with a jolt. Other than that it was the same particular routine that I face every  morning. Upon reaching the office I had work waiting for me in excel form. Towards the afternoon, I did more sorting and compiling of documents to be sent to the Inland Revenue of Malaysia. Other than that, I had more opportunity to learn about stock reconciliation in Shell. Had lunch with my colleagues and found it to be amusing. Haha as a mother of one, she is indeed very interesting. The best part? They kept encouraging me to speak cantonese. Earlier on after lunch, I did more documentation and helped to arrange the files neatly. Did some computer work and discussed the possibility of extending my internship in order to fulfill the requirement of a 12-week internship duration. Discussed with my colleagues about the holidays. Ran up and down because my Shell identity pass couldn't scan properly. Other than that it was another day's of work. =)

Day 1 & 2

Work began at the crack of dawn. I arrived at Shell House Malaysia, Damansara by 1 hour plus early.
Started day 1 with an onboarding routine (basically orientation). Soon after I was picked up by Marlini to be introduced shortly to all the hydrocarbon management department staff. Felt really welcomed with their generous hospitality. Marlini (who is the second in chain of command reporting under the head manager of Hydrocarbon management, Hooi Li). By the way I was interviewed by Hooi Li without the slightest idea in my mind that she is leading a big group of people under her. Straight away I was handed a module or I believe so to be, regarding custom and excise overview and team structure. I am allocated under the custom and excise team in the hydrocarbon management department. I studied it and couldn't finish it within the remaining hours at Shell.

p/s: I was invited by the HM deparment(short for hydrocarbon management) to participate in a bowling  competition.Enlisted under Hooi Li's team, I kept bowling for each turn including theirs haha to make up for my late entrance to the bowling alley. Had caroling and exchange of presents.

2nd day
I got the hang of custom and excise with the exposure on all the thai written custom and excise forms. I was made to study custom and excise duties for Thailand. Products included jet fuel, ron 95, ron 97 and other lubricants. Learned how to calculate customs and duties for each product. Learned how to see the flowchart for excise duties, excise duties return and customs. I also learnt about SAP and GSAP. Programs used by Shell to handle accounting materials. Learned how to operate the photostat machine more efficiently. Improved my handwriting. Got to see comparisons of different excise duties charged between Hong kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Manila. I was even fortunate to be a lunch buddy for my colleagues. Oh yeah not to mention, getting stuffed with goodies each day so far. Brought back few snacks and chocolates.
